All you need to know about Rosedale
It’s hard to believe that the peaceful valley of Rosedale was once at the centre of a booming ironstone industry. From the mid-19th century until the 1920s, thousands of miners lived and worked here, filling the dale with the noise, smoke and energy of heavy industry. Today, that industrial past has given way to a calm, characterful village community surrounded by some of Britain’s most spectacular moorland scenery.
Centuries of Yorkshire hill farming have shaped the landscape into the patchwork of fields, dry stone walls and sweeping heather moors you see now. Rosedale Abbey lies close to the heart of the North York Moors National Park, perfectly placed for exploring nearby Pickering as well as the east coast favourites of Scarborough and Whitby.
Visitors come for the tranquillity, wide open skies and fresh air, but stay for the superb walking, welcoming places to eat, vibrant local culture and a history that runs deep through every lane and hillside. Rosedale offers a rare blend of heritage, natural beauty and contemporary rural life — all in one unforgettable setting.

Rosedale Walk
Now a peaceful, rural dale in the heart of the National Park, in the nineteenth century Rosedale was part of industrial Yorkshire, with its ironstone mines, kilns and a railway.
This fabulous 7½-mile circuit takes you from pretty Rosedale Abbey village through rolling valley farmland and into Rosedale itself, bringing you back along the old railway track past the impressive ruins of the old roasting kilns. From the railway, you get superb views of Rosedale – it’s very definitely a walk for a clear day.
